The fact that only the cidr_netmask is in the metadata is a pretty big
clue. ;-)

Yeah, well, it was probably well intended though not well thought out;
and now we're stuck with it, and the RA will continue to support both
names forever.

Exactly. Simply accepting both forms is easy.
