You don't configure the VIP on either box. You do it using heartbeat.
In your haresources file, have something like this:
yourserver.com IPaddr::192.161.1.1/24/eth0
This will give you an eth0:1 with the VIP
As long as both directors have the same haresources, they'll fail the IP=20
address over themselves.
