There was some question a while back regarding the patent Cisco holds on
HSRP, and whether VRRP was too similar. I think they took Alcatel to
court over it at some point. Google will shed some light.
That said, I don't think that gives Cisco the power to take your first
born if you use VRRP on your firewall, even less so if you are not in
the U.S., but it's hard to say whether they can fight a battle if you
use VRRP and try to sell a product based on all that. IANAL but I smell
possible prohibitively costly legal fights that could put and end to
your fun.
On the other hand, if you aren't in the U.S., or you just don't care,
use all the VRRP you like. ;)
