Serial Connection

I am brand new to HA and Heartbeat.  I am reading the docs now.  In the Getting Started doc it says a serial connection is "mandatory".  Is there anyway I can substitute a /dev/ttyS0 for a network interface card?

Instead of having my heartbeat over a ttyS0 + eth0 I would have eth0 + eth1.

That would still give me redundancy because I would still be using to methods of communicating with node2 from node1.

Can this be done?
