You can configure heartbeat to do send/look for heartbeats on either or both 
the serial and network interfaces by changing the /etc/ha.d/ha.cf file.

For serial you would uncomment the line:

serial  /dev/ttyS0

And for ethernet you would use:

udp    eth0

Of course changing the second parameter in both cases to the proper 
device(s) you are using.

If you want to be really fault tolerant I suppose you would use both serial 
and Ethernet, but just one or the other works fine as well.
