create your own heartbeat circuit, don't count on an existing service.
a couple ways to do this.
1. dedicated link (serial, ethernet, whatever) between the two machines.
2. use the existing network connections and have the HA IP be an alias.
the problem wiht #2 is that network loads may interfere with the
heartbeat, causing each machine to think that the other is down.
once the other machine is detected to be down you will need to configure
the IP address (either reconfigure the primary eithernet port or setup an
alias) and then send out an ARP packet so that all other machines update
their ARP tables. (gratuitus ARP is the correct term IIRC)
My personal reaction would be to have the HA IP be an alias so that bothe
machines are reachable at all times for maintinance, updates, etc.
