All that does is configure /etc/ha.d/ha.cf + authkeys and invoke scp to
copy it to all nodes.

And to be brutally honest, I've never used it myself, but always vi.
;-)

If you want to contribute improvements to the documentation on how to do
this w/o YaST2, that'll be welcome.

No, but you can download the yast2 heartbeat module source code if you
really want. And, YaST2 is GPL, you could port it to non-SUSE ;-)
