if you compile on linux with ansi, it will choke on such things, too.
and yes, it _does_ compile right now with -ansi on linux,
which means there are no more // in the source tree right now,
at least not within those ifdef branches typically enabled.
anyways, I just did
find . -name "*.[ch]" | xargs grep -Hn '//' > .q
vi -q .q
and a little vim macro, which basically is
:s,//\(.*[^ ]\)[ ]*$,/*\1 */<cr>
which found (beneath a few url:// and "//",
as well as /* // */ , many real // comments.
resulting patch is just now checked in. attached.
