I agree, that autoconf is a big win for the user.  In my limited
experience, however, it is a big pain for the developers to get it to
work right!  My feeling is if the target is just linux platforms, I
don't think it is something that "MUST" be done.  Just an opinion.
I'll be happy to help with the autoconf stuff if that is the
consensus.
