TAKE ACTION!
The U.S. Senate and House are working now on reconciling their two
health care reform bills, neither of which are
we happy with. But we still have an opportunity to influence their
decisions, particularly in the area of states rights:
The Senate bill provides for State Innovation Waivers that would allow
states to enact comprehensive health care reform, but it prohibits States
from asking for these waivers for seven years. The start date for state
waivers must not be delayed until 2017.
With a small change in the proposed legislation, States would be allowed
to move forward in a timely manner with their own health care reform
concepts, to become laboratories or pilot programs demonstrating how health
care for all can be achieved with cost control in place.
Here is the language we want to see in the final bill:
Waiver for State Innovation States are encouraged to develop
innovative strategies for financing health care. States may apply for
waivers that allow creative financing of health care which create universal,
quality, affordable health care.
You can help by sending a simple message to our congressional
representatives asking them to urge their respective conference committee
members to push open the door for state innovation by removing the date
restrictions on State Innovation Waivers.
