BUILDING A SINGLE PAYER MOVEMENT IN NORTHERN COLORADO
Health Care for All Colorado, N. CO Chapter
Fall Update on recent events:
1. Fall membership meeting Oct. 4: We had a good turnout of energetic
activists to hear about and discuss upcoming events and activities. Linda
Mahan distributed Colorado apples and gave a new take on "an apple a day
keeps the doctor away," with her list of 10 things you can do to help make a
health professional available and affordable for all Coloradans and all
Americans. Let us know if you want a copy.
2. CSU Homecoming Parade Oct. 6: HCAC had an unforgettable presence with
three banners, a "single payer, single engine" train, with whistle, and
rousing marching chants led by Kevin Mabry. We had lots of applause from
onlookers for our group: Kathy Waller, Kevin Mabry, Callie Mabry, Julia and
Molly Payne, Carolyn Taylor, Jan Scott, Dakotah Bowens, Kathy Egan, Lea
Ramer-Egan, Chris Schwab, Deb Ham, Ken Tharp, Lew Lachman and Eliza Carney.
3. 208 Commission hearings in Greeley Oct. 11 and Ft. Collins Oct. 12. The
Greeley hearing had about 80 people in attendance, and many spoke out for
single payer, or for changes in the present system that would come about if
single payer were enacted. Supporters of HCAC who spoke included Jeri
Shepard, and Randy Marsh. The Ft. Collins hearing had about 130 in
attendance, including about 38 members or supporters of HCAC. The testimony
was overwhelmingly in favor of single payer. Many HCAC members or
supporters testified for single payer. Thanks to Linda Mahan, Carolyn
Taylor, Christine Csernica-Haas, and Eliza Carney, HCAC had a display table
at both hearings, and we gave out lots of information and materials.
4. Letters to the Editor and Op-eds in local papers. Thanks to our writers
corps, we have a steady stream of well-written and punchy letters and
op-eds in local papers. And people read them! We encourage more of you to
make your views known in our local press. If you need inspiration, talking
points, or help with media addresses, contact Kathy Fischer (karand at frii.com
or 970-226-5386).
5. Our HCAC speakers are making an impact. Since Sept. 1, our speakers
have done several presentations to churches, service clubs and other groups
in N. CO. Thanks to speakers Janet Seeley, Cory Carroll, Kathy Waller,
Glenn Pearson, Phil Moeckli, Christine Moorcroft, and Gloria Boersch.
If you belong to or know a group who would like to have a speaker from
HCAC, please contact Linda Mahan (lmahan at alum.bu.edu or 484-2259). And dont
be shyask your group if theyd like a speaker!
6. New Yahoo group for HCAC. Thanks to Dave Bean, a great IT volunteer
from Denver, HCAC now has a separate e-mail group that is designed for two
way communication, so that those of us who are so inclined can share our
ideas and what we are doing with other single-payer advocates around the
state. Its another way to help build the movement. To join the group, go to
http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/hc4ac/ If you have any questions, need
assistance or would like a special e-mail invite, please call Dave at
303-777-0395 or email davebean at ecentral.com .
7. New HCAC T-shirts --- be a walking billboard for single payer! We
now have 3-color, organic cotton T-shirts with the HCAC logo on the front
and single payer benefits on the back. Were asking a donation of $10 for
each shirtsuch a deal! Sizes are S, M, L and XL. Make checks out to HCAC.
To get your shirt, contact Linda Mahan (lmahan at alulm.bu.edu, or
970-484-2259) or Eliza Carney (abcdrn at greyrock.org or 970-416-0636)
8. And last, but by no means least, HCAC needs your financial help. If you
ve read this far, you must be really interested in all were doing and the
progress weve made in moving forth the public dialogue on health care
reform and single payer as a solution. And this is just in N. CO. Exciting
things are happening in the rest of the state too (check it out on our
website, www.healthcareforallcolorado.org), but in order to keep the
momentum going and increase our educational and lobbying efforts to make
Colorado the first state with a single payer system of health care, we need
funds. We can do it, but not without your financial help. Please send a
check for whatever you can afford, or for whatever you think its worth to
have affordable, accesible for your children and grandchildren. Make your
checks out to HCAC, and send it to HCAC, P.O. Box 280767, Lakewood, CO
80228. Or you can now join and donate online at our website
www.healthcareforallcolorado.org
