You can always restart the client - if not, I'd like to know why!
Please investigate this.  What do you mean by "the client seemingly
dead"?  It can't die!

Killing the client is a bad idea, but I don't believe it's intrinsically
impossible to kill it and restart.  Perhaps you are not waiting long
enough for the pid lock to clear?
