I never got that working on linux 2.2. But I got it working easily in
linux 2.4. Perhaps I switched the default in the Makefile to
"merge_requests=1" in recent issues? And maybe it still makes 2.2
kernels ill (why, oh, why)?

But no .. the default looks to have been zero forever.

Oh well, must be just a buffer deadlock against the lvm patch for
kernel 2.2.18 then. Cured by syncing often! Set sync_intvl=1.
