I used

insmod nbd merge_requests=0

And the dead locks seemed to vanish afterwards!

Would you mind telling me what merge_requests=0 and sync_intvl=1 do so that 
I better understand the possible problems I had?  Also, why do you think the 
default values didn't work for me?
